We need to talk

November 2012

Again and again I'm convinced through experience that you should talk about things. Clever, right? What I mean is, if something doesn't feel right between two people, they need to talk things through. Keeping various thoughts and feelings pent up inside isn't helping either of them. What one or both end up with is a self-perpetuating spiral of thoughts that are increasingly negative and increasingly presumptuous. You think you know how this awkward situation came about. You know why the other person's wrong. You're sure the way you see things is how it should be. You're not at fault here. Shut up, take a breath, and start by telling the other person that something doesn't feel right. Take it calmly from there. So much nonsense in the world can be avoided with this simple advice.
